Foreword

“天下西湖三十六,就中之最屬杭州”,歷史上杭州西湖以其“景致天成,宛如畫圖”的獨(dú)特魅力風(fēng)靡國內(nèi)外。世界著名旅行家馬可·波羅盛贊杭州為“最美麗華貴的天城”。2011年6月24日,在第35屆世界遺產(chǎn)大會上,杭州西湖文化景觀成功登錄《世界遺產(chǎn)名錄》,再次進(jìn)入了西方的視野。這頂“世界遺產(chǎn)”的桂冠所具有的巨大吸引力,提高了西湖在國際上的地位,它的名望、美譽(yù),使其成為最具特色之杭州文化。

“Of the country's thirty-six West Lakes, Hangzhou claims the best.” For countless years, Hangzhou's West Lake has been known home and abroad for her “picturesque landscape”. The world's renowned adventurer Marco Polo extolled Hangzhou as “the City of Heaven, the most beautiful and magnificent in the world.” On June 24, 2011, during the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou was inscribed into the World Heritage List, reprising her past glory in the West. The inscription has brought more attention to West Lake in the global context, further accentuating its reputation as the most featured cultural element of Hangzhou.

杭州西湖世界文化遺產(chǎn)監(jiān)測管理中心承擔(dān)著西湖文化景觀的宣傳、研究等工作。為進(jìn)一步推動西湖融入國際文化潮流,使更多的世界友人了解珍貴的西湖文化遺產(chǎn),更真切地體驗(yàn)西湖遺產(chǎn)的歷史意義,我們希望通過拓寬國內(nèi)外的信息渠道,發(fā)掘一切可利用的資源,尤其是與境外博物館、圖書館以及檔案資料室或高等院校等研究機(jī)構(gòu)建立資源共享的關(guān)系,并采取出版物、展覽、研討會等并駕齊驅(qū)的學(xué)術(shù)形式,將傳播西湖文化的研究推向縱深,為全世界展示一個天生麗質(zhì)的“大家閨秀”——杭州西湖。一個偶然的機(jī)會,我們結(jié)識了美國史密斯松尼博物學(xué)院下屬的佛利爾和薩克勒兩亞洲博物館的客座獨(dú)立書畫學(xué)人謝小珮。近些年來,謝小珮女士致力于構(gòu)建一座我們與佛利爾博物館之間的西湖文化橋梁,疏通了傳遞信息和宣傳交流的途徑。出于對傳統(tǒng)文化的珍愛,和對西湖景致的鐘情,她代替我們與佛利爾美術(shù)館的視覺資料檔案部的負(fù)責(zé)人戴維德先生聯(lián)系了出版和展覽的具體事宜,經(jīng)過協(xié)商獲得了對方的許可,最終為我們提供了佛利爾博物館藏,原東亞藝術(shù)史專家本杰明·馬爾智于1925年7月4日至8月4日間在杭州所拍攝的七十余張照片及他在杭州所記的三十七頁日記,促成了這本書的出版,讓世人有幸再見百年前充滿神韻的杭城和風(fēng)姿綽約的西湖。

The Monitoring and Management Center of Hangzhou West Lake World Cultural Heritage is working on the promotion and research of the West Lake Cultural Landscape. With the aim of furthering the fusion of the cultural elements of the heritage site into the globe's cultural context and encouraging better understanding of its value and historical significance, we endeavor to broaden the channels for information sharing, explore and employ all available resources, establish an information sharing mechanism with international partners, museums, libraries, archives, universities or research institutes, in particular, and stimulate research into West Lake and its related culture in the format of publication, exhibition and symposium. In this way, we will better showcase the breathtaking beauty of the West Lake. On one occasion, we met Sarah Shay, an independent Chinese calligraphy and painting scholar for the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, who is interested in becoming a liaison to bridge the cultural exchange between the Freer Gallery of Art and us. In recent years, Sarah helped us greatly in promotion and communication of the West Lake culture, and as an enthusiast of Chinese traditional culture and an admirer of the picturesque West Lake, she has contacted David in charge of the visual archives of the Freer Gallery of Art for arrangements of publications and exhibitions. Her Endeavor has made available the 70 plus photos and 37 pages of diary created by Benjamin March, an expert of East Asia Art History, during his visit of Jangzhou from July 4thto August 4th, 1925.

我們將在此基礎(chǔ)上,創(chuàng)立一個“西人眼里的西湖”的窗口,循著世人的向往,體察大眾的趣味,詮釋一個美好、浪漫、宜居的杭州。讓西湖以其非凡的影響力在國際上廣泛延伸。

In a similar context, we have created a perspective of the beautiful, romantic and highly livable Hangzhou that is friendly to westerners' mindset to widen the cultural gravitation of West Lake.
